The Remarkable Gannet!

We visited the RSPB site at Bempton Cliffs today and spent all day wandering up and down the cliff path watching hundreds of pairs of gannets, a truly spectacular site. Gannets live for about 35 years, pair for life and return to the same nest every year. Once their fledgling leaves the nest it is left to fend for itself, so has to learn how to take off from the water and then learn how to catch fish, many don't survive. 70% of the world population of Gannets are found in Britain and Ireland.

This was the last day before the RSPB close the site to carry out building work on the visitor centre, so all the chocolate and ice creams were half-price! They re-open again in March 2015, well worth a visit, especially in the Summer when the characterful puffins are around.
