Dämmerung (or Twilight)

The original painting was painted in 1922, and you can see it the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid.

It was painted by George Grosz. And his story is well worth a read.

A word of caution though: if you're at work do NOT google George Grosz pictures. Some of his early work centred around the seedy side of life in Berlin in the 1920s and are somewhat <cough> shall we say anatomically detailed.

This signed copy of the picture is number 16 in his folio Ecce Homo* (Latin for "Behold The Man" ). And here's a bit of history for you - Shortly after publication of Ecce Homo in 1923, all available copies of the portfolio were seized by the Berlin police and Grosz and his publisher were prosecuted for obscenity. The Nazis ordered the offending plates and drawings to be destroyed; they were publicly burned in May 1933.

Some copies of the portfolio escaped that though. This painting came from (a sadly not complete) copy number 6.

*which were apparently the words used by Pontius Pilate to introduce Jesus.
