Labour Lambeth: for those with lots, not little

...Clapham

The free-entry paddling pool, Clapham Common
Closed in the summer of 2014

No happy children splashing about in the water.
Little water to splash in.
No grown-ups sitting on the grass, relaxing and keeping a watchful eye on their young charges.
No families who can’t afford to go away on on a summer holiday.

Ten yards across the road, Clapham Old Town Regeneration Project
Completed in the summer of 2014

A busy road re-routed, traffic calming and extended pedestrians areas.
Lot of new trees, flower beds, benches.
Public toilets, long since closed in a round of council spending cuts, converted to a pavement cafe called WC - ‘Wine and Charcuterie’.
Nowhere to spend a penny.

Labour-run Lambeth Council spent £2.8m on these trees and benches. How much would it cost to spruce up the paddling pool? Or just keep it open?

The New Old Town is nice for all Clapham residents who have the money to spend their evenings and weekends in the now even lovelier cafes, restaurants and trendy pubs. And what a bonus for those who live in the roads off this corner of the common. The improvements can only increase the value of their multi-million pound houses.
