Colonial Lace

I was sitting in the Brisbane city Queen Street Mall this afternoon waiting for Mrs Mail to return. It was a very hot and humid afternoon, and I was drifting in and out of various shopping spaces trying to decide which one had the coolest air conditioning.

Anyway, at eye level, the shops all have redesigned glass and arty shop fronts, but if you cast your eyes above the throng, above the young and full of life teenagers, above the emos who all look the same, yet desperately want to look different to the rest of the world, above the people sucking on cancer sticks because it is against the law to smoke in or near a shop here, and you will see a snapshot of the colonial history of Brisbane.

Look at this wonderful facade. All arches and colonial iron lace, with verandahs and overhangs for shade in the tropical heat. A snapshot of yesteryear, that still exisits, but you wouldn't know it from the inside, because all you would see there is a wall full of LCD TVs or mens wear.
