Life is like a river

Seljahjallagil in Mývatnssveit

This has been an excellent day! View photo in LARGE

We began our journey by driving to Mývatn at 9:00 and first stop was Helga Þyri and Þórður's house at Grænavatn. The group gathered there for coffee and kleinur and we planned the day.
Then we drove this rocky path or side road (in jeeps, I might add! Not suitable for small cars) all the way to the top of Seljahjallagil. There we left the cars (except for the drivers) and walked the almost 3 kilometers down and through this magnificent gorge. The basalt columns make an impressive pattern and everything was really just "awesome"! :)
This is what the craters in our current volcanic eruption will probably look like after a few thousand years.
We met the drivers again at the end of the trail and had a small picnic. There was also a bunch of wild blueberries growing there so that made a nice addition to the refreshments.

After the walk we drove back to Mývatn, had a soak in Mývatn Nature Baths and then headed home. We were finally home after 21:00 in the evening, very hungry and tired, but happy with this splendid day.
