Old Lady Moth (Mormo maura)

This is one of U&L's Moth Trap Goodies as she refers to them! One online reference I saw called it also the Black Underwing. Whatever, it seems that Old Lady is the most common name. It is quite a big moth to me and certainly impressive. The caterpillar looks well upholstered but not one of the hairy ones! It seems that it is on the wing during July and August, but evidently extending into September as by this find. Maybe the reasonably warm weather is keeping them active. During the day the moth hides away in old buildings and sheds and frequents gardens and damp ground. The caterpillar feeds on Blackthorn and Hawthorn. A very nice find. Thanks to U&L for the opportunity to photograph the moth.
