Another Momentous Year

The year stone on the gable of the Robertson Arms in Carnwath marks a year of great disharmony throughout Europe and further afield.

Queen Victoria was on the Throne and Lord John Russell was Prime Minister.

Also in that year The Caledonian Railway opened the first through carriage service from Edinburgh to Carlisle, via Carstairs.

And WH Smith opened its first ever railway station kiosk at Euston.
