Coinage, United Kingdom

#2 son decided to collect a set of the new coins introduced in 2008, and arrange them into the shape of the Royal Shield of Arms. My chance to have another go at close up shots.

The new designs were chosen by open competition, won by Matthew Dent who works in London as a graphic designer. The shield has been split between the six denominations from 1p to 50p. The entire shield is displayed at the top on the £1 coin.

I chose to display these coins today, as decimal currency was introduced in the UK on 15 February 1971. I can remember handing in a two shilling piece to buy my school lunch and receiving a brand new shiney 1p in change. It doesn't seem like 39 years ago.
