Lantern Tower

The Octagon ‘Lantern Tower’ of Ely Cathedral rises high above the cathedral known as ‘The Ship of the Fens’ because it can be seen for miles around on its little hill rising above the surrounding flat fen landscape. When the cathedral was founded it was built on an island surrounded by marshes and the Octagon was built in the 1300s after the central Norman tower collapsed. Unfortunately this photo does not show the height and true beauty of the 'lantern'.
