Indyref Scotland

The Independence Referendum, or Indyref as it's familiarly become known, happens today in Scotland. The biggest voting turnout ever, is expected ( over 80% compared to 40% normal turnout). The campaign has energised everyone here. Scottish people want a new democracy. Some media commentators have asked, what's happened to make this suddenly become a possibility? They should have remembered, the first referendum was held in 35 years ago in 1979 - it was for Devolution, and was stymied at the last hurdle by the hastily enacted "40% rule" which demanded that 40% of the electorate must vote in favour- an unprecedented requirement that had never been required in General elections! Devolution was finally voted in in 1999- 20 years later, and has been a great success. Perhaps that is just one of several reasons why it's happening...and why there will be a huge turnout. Results are expected on Friday morning. Watch this space!
