Somebody said today, on Facebook I think, that now the Scottish referendum is over then we would go back to showing pictures of cats! In my case, plants!

This is Nerine bowdenii, a beautiful South African bulb which lights up the late summer garden. Always said to flower best at the foot of a sunny wall, but that's nonsense - here they flower well even in the shade!

They come mostly in pink, but there are white forms and different shades of pink and magenta. Another species, N. sarniensis, which is not generally hardy, has a much wider colour range.
