Birdwatchers in Bulgaria

Today we met our British-based birdwatching tour group at Sofia airport, and took a drive of over six hours east to Pomerie on the Black sea coast. This was our only bird-watching stop on the long trip; we had distant views above all of black storks, spoonbills and great egrets.

They were all behind a long fence and hedge; hence the stool (otherwise used to get in and out of our van). Our driver is as enthusiastic a birder as any of us--he is in the orange shirt on the left (view it large to see the birds on it). Our local guide is at the scope; the English guide is in the black shirt, and Marylee is of course in the green shirt.
