Staircase to the lamp

This is Flamborough Lighthouse, an amazing feat of Victorian engineering perched on the edge of cliffs above Flamborough.

Originally the lamp was oil fired but now it is a 1kw electric bulb, specially manufactured in the USA and remotely controlled by Trinity House. The lenses weigh over 3 tonnes and the lamp which constantly rotates is floated on a bed of mercury to keep it level.

Great views from the lamp room, outside the sea and coast line and inside intricate decorated Victorian ironwork - no clean straight lines here!
