The morning after

We'd stayed up most of the night to watch the results come in. It was 45 yes to 55 no, with an amazing turnout of 85%. Only four areas returned a yes majority: Dundee, Glasgow, North Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire.

It's been a fascinating time to watch politics in action. But today seemed dull and flat compared to the excitement and frenzied campaigning of the last few weeks. I'd expected the result to be a lot closer.

Then a broken looking Alex Salmond announced his intention to step down as First Minister.

What a day.
