Tudor cottage

We went on an 8 mile hike this afternoon and while taking a new turn in Sidmouth, we found this historic house.

This building was reportedly seized by William the Conqueror from King Harold's mother and gifted in 1067 to the Abbey of Mt St Michael, Normandy. It was repossessed by Henry V and given in 1415 to Syon Abbey in Middlesex. It became a church house that was confiscated by Henry VIII in 1540 at the Dissolution. It was used as a manorial court house, sold in 1623 and remained in the manor until 1919. In 1972, a fine Elizabethan screen was discovered and restored.
