facing the sunrise..

..are the flowers of kangaroo paws, this species Anigozanthos manglesii and emblem of Western Australia.

The shape of the flowers and position of the anthers allows pollen to be deposited on the heads of visiting birds and transferred from flower to flower.
Different species of paw deposit pollen on to different parts of the birds' heads so there is limited chance of cross pollination.

I know I've blipped these curious plants before but this is literally their time in the sun and worthy of anther blip.
