Midden

This is a cross-section of a local archaeological site. It is, in fact, and Iron Age midden (rubbish dump) dating to around 1000-1200 years ago. On this site, the nearby Iron Age village threw their waste - mainly shellfish from their diet, (the layer of white shells) but we can usually find pieces of broken pottery, and sometimes tools made out of stone, bone, or antler. Once, I found a bronze harness-mount, inlaid with coloured enamel (it is in the regional museum). I usually take a walk down here on most weekends, just to see if anything new has turned up. (We found an Iron Age skeleton in a box-grave once).
