Mist

A misty day with some rain. This photograph was taken this morning from the viewpoint just outside the front of our house. The light was over the valley, but mist was hanging about on the hills and here is covering the other hill top village of Lacoste, which we can usually see very clearly.

The church below is Bonnieux’s ‘new’ church. The old 12th century church is the one right at the top of the village and is only used occasionally now, for special festivities and always at Christmas when the extensive crib/village scene that I mentioned before is constructed there.

The ‘new’ church was built in 1870 to make it easier for residents to access. By then many people had moved down from the highest points of the village and made their homes on the flatter land below. All the newer housing is down there.

Between the church and Lacoste the land is farmed. There are some orchards, but mainly what you can see are vineyards, some with leaves already turning brown and others still green. The patch of bright green is the village football pitch, newly marked out and used we think for the first time last weekend.

Before the rain, we made it to Apt again. This time for the farmers’ market held on a Tuesday morning during the summer. A ‘real’ farmers’ market this, with growers setting up stalls with their own produce, sometimes just a few lettuces and tomatoes, some with a range of vegetables. A small, friendly market, very different from the huge, bustling Saturday one.
