Mountain Warfare

Woke at Rifugio Lagazuoi to cloud and rain this morning which meant a change of plan. Instead of a walk surrounded by views of the stunning mountains, we headed down for an amazing history lesson en route.
This was the scene of tough and incredible mountain warfare in WW1 between the Italians and Austrians. We walked down through tunnels blasted out of the rock where the armies had spent over 2 years in a rather fruitless battle to gain (steep, rocky) ground on Mount Lagazuoi.
Martini Ledge is famous in this battle as the base of the Italians, amongst the Austrians who were positioned close above them. They took their turns to attack, with the help of tunnels, rocky trenches and explosives, and the Italians had the last say when they finally made some headway from Martini Ledge. (Captain Etto Martini - not Any Time, Any Place ...).

Superlatives abound.
