If you can't beat them...

Saturday 27 September 2014: Haweswater

The current guests at the Lodge are in for a fortnight so we had Saturday before hospital visiting free. We had heard that Haweswater was low due to the summer we have had so decided to visit.

I have seen the level lower but it must be nearly 30 years ago. For those who don't know the story of Haweswater it was dammed in 1935 forcing the evacuation and destruction of Mardale village. This was done to provide water for Manchester. Now when the level is low walls and other structures are revealed. I say walls but that is possibly over stating things, I don't know if they have collapsed under water or were knocked down in preparation for flooding. Certainly the village church and pub were dismantled.

This view is looking roughly East towards the "deep end" of the lake where the Dam is. The foreground shows the road between two "walls" (yes those heaps of stones) and what remains of the road. It is interesting to see the road doesn't appear to have been covered in tarmac but still just cobbles.

You can gain some idea of the area exposed if you look at clickychick's shot looking the other way it is here.
