No Muddy Boots In Here

The finest, ornate, muddy boot scrapers, made of iron, are still seen by the doorways of historic buildings and elegant town houses. They are also beside smaller old homes, where they are embedded in the wall next to the front door. These are more basic but all were a necessity before the roads were paved. At one time they were on a list of essentials for schools, usually at least two to each doorway. They are still on sale for gardeners and anyone else wishing to tackle muddy boots before approaching clean houses. This one I noticed in Trumpington Street, Cambridge, which is a very old thoroughfare with many grand buildings. I think it would be interesting to search out more of them.
