Come the Fall

Okay, I accept that falling leaves in my garden are a pain, yet I have to acknowledge that the changing colours of foliage on the trees at this time of year are a sight to behold.

In scientific terms, shortening days and less light means that the photosynthesis in trees which takes place in the bright days of summer comes to an end and trees themselves begin to close down their summer life and the greenness of leaves, produced by a natural chlorophyll disappears.

This is when we begin to see the changing hue on the landscape as the leaves lose their greenness and yellows, orange, reds and browns take prominence. Driving through the countryside early morning as the sun broke through one day this week, laid bare this magical change in colour around us.

A walk through a park later in the day revealed the true depth of the colour seen in this picture, and autumn is only just upon us.

You can argue that the clean, fresh appearance of trees in the springtime heralds the true awakening of nature, yet for sheer beauty this time of year I suggest has the edge. And all those colours are a photographer’s dream.
