Starting tomorrow’s bread

By hydrofoil, by bus and, for a very small part of the journey, on foot, we have come to the steep winding streets of Ano Poli - the Old Town just below Thessaloniki’s fortified walls. We walked in the drizzle down to the centre where not only were others walking but I also saw one of the best signs ever, indicating the metres and walking minutes needed to get to a host of destinations. Walking signs I've seen previously have all been in the countryside. Here people are being encouraged (even down to telling you how many calories you’ll burn) to walk distances that are usually done by bus. Brilliant.

Back in Ano Poli this evening (walking, of course) we passed this bakery where work was just beginning on tomorrow’s bread.
