Sunday Morning

Early mass at St. Mary's Cathedral. Unusual effects of light. (More here.)

I've never seen this before. I should come to early mass more often.

"The holy hush of ancient sacrifice."

— from "Sunday Morning" by Wallace Stevens

Afterward I got caught in the maze of closed streets for the Portland Marathon and it took 45 minutes of driving around in circles to go a mile or two. It's hard to hang on to the holy hush in the busyness of day.

"What is divinity if it can come
Only in silent shadows and in dreams?"
