Sumela Monastery

We arrived in Trabzon at seven, with delightful morning light. A leisurely breakfast while we docked and then a journey of about 50 miles up to the stunning Sumela Monastery.

First we were on a large coach. After a loo stop we transferred to a small mini bus to take us further up the vertiginous little road to a photo opportunity - see blip.

And finally, a walk up over dramatic tree roots and step after step, to the monastery itself.

A bit of drama - a huge rock fell down, narrowly missing the Excursions lady.

It was challenging getting there. It was hot and a bit slippery in places.

But it was worth it. The Rock Chapel with fabulous frescoes and the views across the wooded hillsides and rocks.

We are so lucky that the company found such a wonderful alternative to the Crimean ports.
