the mulberry story...

..pyramus and thisbe, lovers forbidden to marry because of their parents' rivalry.
And the story goes that Pyramus and Thisbe from the city of Babylon meet beneath a mulberry tree to pledge their love to each other.

Thisbe arrives first, but upon seeing a lioness with a mouth bloody from a recent kill, she flees, leaving behind her veils.
When Pyramus arrives he assumes that a fierce beast had killed her. Pyramus kills himself splashing blood on the white mulberry leaves and staining the white mulberry fruits, turning them dark.
Thisbe returns finding Pyramus' dead body under the shade of the mulberry tree.
Thisbe stabs herself with the same sword. The gods hear Thisbe's lament, and forever change the colour of the mulberry fruits into the stained colour to honour the forbidden love.
(from Wiki)

Here in my garden is a laden mulbery tree with berries in all their glory and ripening.
Delicious and sweet the ripe fruit leave behind a memory of their presence on fingers in a wine purple stain and now the memory of Pyramus and Thisbe...and yes, Romeo and Juliet.
