Day Seven - View from a Volcano

More snow today, and sub zero temperatures. I guess that's Iceland for you! We've been lucky to have the snow as well, it hasn't really stopped us doing anything and it's given us some spectacular views. Today was a good example of that - we went to Krafla, about 40 minutes from our apartment.

It was extremely smelly! Steam was venting in several places, with warm water running along the side of the road - it was this water that was smelly. Rotten eggs all round us... On the way up we passed the geothermal power station. The view when we got to the top was again, spectacular. It was frightening to think that 30 years ago this volcano erupted 9 times and theoretically could go again... and humbling to see nature in all its glory. Several times we have commented on how large the areas of wilderness are, and today was no exception. Apart from the power station, there is nothing for miles around.

I took loads of photos from the top, again quite difficult due to the contrast but this time I was prepared for how they looked when I first put them on the laptop, so editing wasn't such a shock today. This one is my favourite of the week so far, it seems to show better than the others how desolate and wild the place is.

Tomorrow we are heading back to Reykjavik; we are taking all day so we can stop on the way and take more photos. And then, that's it - back to reality (and a pc with a proper screen!)
