Limpid waters

Today we walked from Vinca to Rodes. The walk was 14 kms but with only 300 metres of ascent and we took it fairly slowly in the heat which was quite bearable now we are in mid October. The walk was quite varied starting at Vinça lake. We passed by a mill stream and an old well, walked through the perched village of Rodes with its ruined castle and granite mine and its unusual Catalan tiles which are now rarely seen. We walked along the old Roman road before stopping for lunch above the dam where forest fires raged a few years ago while we were stuck on the road watching the Canadair planes scooping up water from the lake. We then walked though a spectacular gorge with remains of a 13th century aqueduct built to water the garden of the Palais des Rois de Majorque in Perpignan. The water still flows down to valley to Perpignan in a more modern canal. We then stopped by the river Tet for a rest where the waters were far more tranquil. Denis asked me at one point what the English word 'selfie' meant so, of course, I had to demonstrate! It was altogether a very pleasant walk.
