England Expects ...

A splendid bronze memorial to Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson (1758-1805), dating from 1813-1815. It is the first major work designed by Matthew Cotes Wyatt (1777-1862) and was sculpted by Sir Richard Westmacott (1775-1856).

The chained figures can be seen as prisoners of war, or as representing the suffering produced by slavery (a major benefactor of the memorial was noted anti-slavery campaigner William Roscoe).
