Religious intolerance at Huntly Castle

This splendid 'frontispiece' over the doorway was vandalised by enthusiastic but misguided Covenanters in the 17th Century. NB this was when covenanters were on the winning side. Later, the covenanters were personae non gratae and themselves subject to persecution. What a mess is made when Church and State, religion and politics get mixed up and confused. Above the doorway the figures of the Archangel Gabriel and of Christ were, literally, defaced.
