Above And Beyond...

Remembering and Rats

As the forecast was rain again, we set off for Hereford Town Centre, where we go once or twice a year, for a change. On the way there, my mobile rang. I could see it was my elderly neighbour, Glenys, who lives across the road. She suffers from alzheimers, but still drives about and looks after our house, and takes in parcels. I couldn't answer as I was driving. On arriving and parking, I phoned her back and after prompting she remembered she had a parcel delivered for me.

We walked around, browsing in shops. During the course of three hours there, the phone rang another three times. Yes, it was our Glenys with the same message!

As normal, we stopped off in All Saints Church, High Street, which has a rather spectacular cafe built on its own structure inside of the medieval arches inside the church, as well as a glass toilet, glass vestry and office. Before having a cuppa, the wife saw there was an opportunity to 'light a candle' in remembrance of those who've died. She lit one for her mum and dad, and the blip photo is of that lovely moment.

Moments later we got talking to a delightful lady who was a bell ringer there and said the cafe was a way of raising funds. At the moment they needed about £15K to get the medieval bells sorted. It's a lovely church and it's walls are bowed. Here's a quick precise:

The first church on the site was probably erected around 1200, but rebuilt later in the 13th and in the 14th centuries, possibly because of earthquake damage. Most of the present structure was in place by 1330. The church underwent a major restoration in 1997, which included major work to the tower and spire which both twists and leans.

On getting home, I immediately saw Glenys to collect my parcel. She has her 'nephew' (mid twenties) Oliver, living with her as he doesn't get on with his mums boyfriend. In the hallway was a large cage with two rats. Apparently Oliver just collected them to look after for a short while for a friend. Now I know she wouldn't have such in the house before he moved in; she obviously likes the company!!

A day of remembering (or not!) and rats!
