Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Wire and concrete

These huge six foot high cubes of concrete were cast in 1940 when we were living in fear of being invaded by Nazi Germany. They were designed to prevent tanks landing on our beach. There were also rolls of barbed wire on picket posts to impede the movement of ground troops. At the end of the war the wire was neatly rolled up and then abandoned on the beach. These coils remained buried in the sand for nigh on 70 years before being exposed by the recent high tides and on-shore gales.

The tank traps seem to have a life of their own. Sometimes, as here and now, they remain standing upright. At other times the waves undermine the blocks causing them to fall over, casualties of the weather. Later, as the sands shift and the waves pound them, they stand up again! Amazing forces, sand and water!
