Press button A

We didn't realize it but the phones of our youth had character.  Long before mobile phones came on the scene, we only had the telephone kiosk, with the black phone apparatus.

Put in your money, press button A if someone answered or button B if they didn't to get your money back.  Only it never worked out that way.  If no one answered and you pressed button B to get you money back, sometimes you would hear the clink of money but it would not appear in the little black shute under the B.  This was because some scamster had stuffed paper in where the shute was.  This would prevent the money from falling down into the shute. Eventually he would do his rounds of the telephone boxes to collect his ill-gotten gains.

You had to admire his enterprise, but sometimes some innocent would beat him to it, and make a nice little bonus out of a genuine call.
