Today I saw Flowers at Curzon, Shaftesbury Avenue (part of BFI London Film Festival)

“A moving and beautifully performed Basque-language feature focusing on interlocking stories of grief from the directors of the acclaimed For 80 Days. Ane, who is in her forties, is told that she is experiencing an early menopause. Her partner is not particularly understanding, but the unsettling news is soothed when she receives a bunch of flowers from an unnamed friend or admirer. When another bunch arrives shortly after, she starts to investigate who might have sent them. Her discovery brings her into contact with another family who is experiencing their own trauma. In witnessing their inconsolable grief, Ane begins to view her own problems in a very different light. Basque directors Jon Garaño and Jose Mari Goenaga follow up their acclaimed For 80 Days (LFF 2010) with another nuanced and beautifully performed study of intercutting stories. Loreak is a sensitive, character-driven film that demonstrates a real compassion for its protagonists and delivers a series of surprises along the way. “
