This is where birding takes you

San Martín de los Andes is a great place for birding because it has such a variety of contexts, from the Valdivian rainforest, through primeval forest and valley wetlands to the Patagonian Steppe. And with a good chance of seeing up to 180 species. Today I went with my friend Scarlett on a 'Birding Challenge' and we logged 74 species in about 10 hours. Our trip took us through many different areas, including this stretch of rather dry upland - we went up here looking for choique, known in English as Darwin's Rhea (Rhea pennata). None seen or heard unfortunately. Four wheel drive obligatory, as the blip shows.
