Monument to the war pigeon

Brussels has lots of monuments and memorials, but this has got to be a very unique one, one you won't find easily anywhere else. This one is dedicated to the pigeons used in WWI and their pigeon fanciers, especially the ones who died during WWI. The monument was designed by the architect Hano and the sculpture made by Victor Voets. The female figure symbolises the gratitude of the nation.

Seen when I went to Brussels this afternoon with A. to shop in the biggest Asian supermarket in Brussels' Chinatown. Must return very often :-)

Thanks very much for your great comments, stars and even two faves on yesterday's apple/pineapple/almond cake :-)

Edited to add that Valerie told me just now that there is a similar memorial to the warrior birds/pigeons in Worthing ! Not so unique after all :-)
