Princes Street at Night

I love the hour or so of dusk when the skies gradually darken and go blue and the lights of the traffic and shop twinkle. Doing traffic trails is at best an inexact science and at a four way junction like the east end of Princes St in Edinburgh you have to guess which combination of traffic movement will give you the best balance of movement without bus top floor lights going right across you picture. As the dusk hour progresses your exposure time tend to double and this can have a bearing on the final image. The best idea is to take lots of pictures so that you can make your final choice when you can see them in detail on your computer screen. I’ve chosen one here where there is plenty of movement to the right and left and even across the bottom of the picture but there are sufficient static elements like the pedestrians waiting to cross the road and the two cars in the middle to hold your attention. This was taken about midway through the session when my exposure time at my lowest ISO was 3.2 seconds. It was taken on a compact but obviously firmly stabilized on a tripod.
