Corallorhiza maculata

Spotted Coralroot is a species of orchid that doesn't photosynthesize (hence the lack of green). Instead it parasitizes underground fungi in order to obtain nutrients. There are many species of such orchids; several of them co-occur here in the mountains of northern California.
