The Future Is Wireless

The Future is Wireless

The National Grid is installing an experimental new power transmission system near to us and it is almost ready for testing.

The new system has no power cables - the pylons are actually wireless relay towers. I have blipped some of these today.

Spokesperson for the project, Ms Park, said there were many benefits to the new system. The lack of wires will mean that power outages, due to high winds or heavy snow bringing down cables, will be a thing of the past.

In addition, because the system is digital, there is very little loss of power when the energy is transmitted along the route and so the savings can be passed on to consumers in the form of reduced bills.

Another benefit of the digital system is that the power can be encrypted to the highest standard to ensure that power theft is eliminated.

If the trial is successful the new system will be rolled out nationwide - and another huge benefit will be felt as the number of hours that photographers spend editing images to remove unsightly wires will be greatly reduced.
