The Wheels Don't Always Turn

I have spoken of the workshop and annex where I have been decorating pottery for the last six weeks. This image is of the machinery that mixes slip for use in molds created long ago by my father, Walter and my uncle, Mac. Birds, Animals, Fairytale figures and small figures called widgets that make great souvenirs for tourists visiting Shearwater Pottery. The slip is also used as a base for decorating the pieces thrown in a darker clay...so that the stains (or colors) applied by brush will be bright when after firing.

This machinery and other beautifully rusted, no longer useful items inhabit a kind of lean-to attached to the workshop. Tin roof and open to the weather, it seems rather static...as it is for much of the year. Almost sculptural in its stillness, it waits in patient beauty for its time.
