Saffron

This All Saints' Day was overcast, both by cloud and thoughts of the departed. It was relieved however by a long walk in the company of 140 others including a group of six of us from my village, to the saffron fields in Neffiès. Good company, an excellent saffron-flavoured meal - the best paella to be had for miles around - and these explosions of colour. The red pistils are what goes to make the spice - 150 of these flowers for one gram of it.
