Out and About

Wolvesey Castle ( The Old Bishop's Palace)

Today we were in Winchester for some urban orienteering, taking in the Cathedral, Winchester College and  Wolvesey Castle to name a few of the tourist spots I visited on my course.

Several checkpoint flags were placed in Wolvsey Castle . It was great fun trying to work out where they were hidden amoungst the old walls.  The regular tourists watched bemused as many of the orienteers ran around like headless chickens looking in every nook and cranny for this particular flag. Viewed on Large you can see a confused orienteer studying his map.

For history lovers, the following is taken from the English Heritage website
Wolvesey has been an important residence of the wealthy and powerful Bishops of Winchester since Anglo-Saxon times. Standing next to Winchester Cathedral, the extensive surviving ruins of the palace date largely from the 12th-century work of Bishop Henry of Blois. The last great occasion here was on 25 July 1554, when Queen Mary and Philip of Spain held their wedding breakfast in the East Hall.
