Life through the lens...

Elsing

The village of Elsing was once a prosperous market town, on the banks of the river Wensum.
Now its few cottages and houses seem lost in tranquil , watery countryside, miles from anywhere.
On a beautiful day like today, what better place to start a country walk.
St Mary's church, with it's huge square tower, has a wealth of detail offering clues to the area's former importance.
There is a brass memorial to Sir Hugh Hastings who built the church and died in 1347.
Also the beautifully decorated 14th century font with a decorated canopy thought to be the oldest in the world.
Our walk took us past the 15th century Elsing Hall . A stunning romantic moated manor house. Unfortunately we could only catch glimpses of it through the trees, and none of the photos came out well.
We did however have a better view of the mill, by the river Wensum.

So today's collage shows details of the font, and a view of the mill.

Many thanks for your comments and stars for yesterday's blip.
