Damaged

A poor year for butterfly numbers (as I may have said before). Or perhaps my expectations are just too high, maybe cities are better for butterflies (less insecticide?).

I think this is a red-spotted purple, albeit a somewhat damaged specimen. This would be a new species for me. But when I was checking out the id, I was surprised to learn that the red-spotted purple and the white admiral (of which I've seen plenty in my time) are now considered one and the same species. Looking closer, it does seem that this specimen has a faint white stripe running across the wings - maybe it is some kind of hybrid as discussed here.
