The Old And The New.

Most of the area around the train station in Cambridge has been redeveloped. The house on the right is part of Wilton Terrace, a row of Victorian houses designed by the architect Richard Reynolds Rowe, who also designed our Guildhall. The developers are reviving their bid to demolish the houses and replace them with two eight storey office blocks. Although the City council opposed the scheme, the developers are now appealing to the Planning Inspectorate. The blocks would totally dominate the area as has already happened opposite where the cranes are. The Victorian Society are fighting to preserve Wilton Terrace. One problem with all this new building is the utterly congested roads in most of Cambridge. I can remember some years ago the beautiful buildings of Queen Anne Terrace opposite Parkers Piece were demolished to provide for a car park. I'm all for modernisation, but up to a point !
