American Military Cemetery

I stopped off here on the city bus tour and spent 40 minutes wandering among the graves and reading the wall of the missing. The sheer volume of lost young life - and these only a tiny fraction of the lost on all sides - is very sad.

Elsewhere on the tour I learned that the term 'pub crawl' originates in Cambridge; the train station is so far from the town because the university didn't want the students to get to the distractions of London too easily; the Schlumberger Cambridge Research Centre has a special tented roof designed to lift off if an experiment causes an explosion; and students are not allowed cars within 5 miles of the city centre.....

Also, rather shockingly, the university did not allow women to receive degrees - just certificates - until 1948 (Oxford 1920 and University of London 1878).
