Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

A sobering end to the day

We started off the day at a superb exhibition of Imperial dinner services on loan from the Hermitage in St Petersburg. We were very much impressed with the craftsmanship involved, less so with the offensively privileged way of life that they represented.

A spot of lunch and then onto the Van Gogh museum. Looking at his painting The Potato Eaters, grim faced peasants sitting in their hovel eating boiled tatties, couldn't help thinking back to the Imperial porcelain we had just seen.

Then, just as darkness fell we walked to Anne Frank's house, which we have wanted to visit for many years. I left feeling emotional, sad and angry. I have chosen to post a photograph of the statue of Anne which stands in the street close to her home.
