Bet she didn't!

This stone is part of the building that is now the local co-op. It was formerly Tuach and Bowness builders, and before that a church. This is #4 of 5 B&W's in a row! LARGE is best for the texture.

Mrs. Ruston who allegedly laid this stone, was born Jane Brown in Sheffield, the younger daughter of a banker. She married Joseph Ruston, who then worked in a cutlery factory in 1859, and went on to bear him at least 8 children: six girls, two boys.

Joseph was an ambitious guy - maybe wanting to prove himself worthy to her banker Daddy, and started his own ironworks company which he took from modest beginnings to a large engineering concern, becoming a PLC in the late 1880's. He also became Sheriff of Lincoln in 1891. He had Monks Manor specially built, but it has now been demolished.
