In concert this evening...

Six year old Mary Poppins* and her household got one of these wonderful electric pianos for Christmas. I'm sure it has a proper name. Keyboard? It was date night for the missy's young parents so I hung out at her place.

According to her piano teacher, she "has to follow the lessons to the note to learn properly, working her way through a playbook for beginners. Also, this is not how you're supposed to sit to play piano."
No kidding.

The playbook was fun for about two pages, then an epic, dawn-of-time movie score erupted with multiple fingers, flying arms, swaying of the head and scrunching of the shoulders; not terribly discordant, so I thought she was still playing from the book even though it seemed to jump from beginner to a bit more advanced rather abruptly. She ended in a perfect flourish (dragging her fingers over the keys) and turned to tell me "that wasn't in the book."

Oh really. And it wasn't. Good gracious.
