Sheep Lane, Midhurst

Following on from yesterday, I came across this cottage being repaired in Sheep Lane, Midhurst. It’s a good example of how different periods merge into the present buildings up and down the town. The wall closest to the camera is newly rendered and has been exposed for some time, with old brick having replaced the wattle and daub. Now the Victorian brick has appeared at the other side of the door, with some new infill and some ancient rubble further away from the camera. Turns out to be quite a variety under the rendering. Most of these cottages didn’t have any damp proof course, with the foot plates placed directly on packed mud. I imagine the owners have had to tank inside, like we did when we renovated a cottage many years ago. Fun at the time, now I prefer easy peasy, if not new. But I love to see these ancient buildings being cared for, hope you find it interesting.
